Who Are We!

Global Citizens means exactly that, global citizen. We believe that no matter where a person comes from and no matter their creed, race, sex, age, gender we are all citizens of this planet we call home. The voices of this blog are Evellin, Husain, and Melisa. Evellin: I am a 20 year old first generation Mexican American. Having Latin roots is a quality I possess and present with pride. My parents immigrated to the United States before having two daughters. Everything my sister and I do is to show our parents that their sacrifice was not in vain and we are forever grateful to them. Husain: I am an international student from India who is married to a beautiful woman from Mexico. It can't get more global for us as this truly is an Indo-Pacific relationship. We are both immigrants and so, immigration and its openness is valued in a very high regard in our families. Melissa: I’m Melisa Sanchez. I was born in Mexico and I’m 21 years of age. I’m a DAC...

DACA and What We Can Do!

On June 15,2012 many non-citizens got an opportunity for a future life with benefits in the U.S. Under Barack Obama’s administration the DACA program was created. This program mostly was helping does who came to America as a child with no mindset of what was happening when they were brought over. It gave them a chance to keep their education going and have a better job. As many as 800,000 recipients had the opportunity to take advantage of it. Dreamers increased the economy throughout the states across all sectors of it where most immigrants are living. Now to this opportunity given to them it gave a chance for people to have their own home, buy cars, and have businesses. This gave an increase in sales and taxes it benefits more than we can imagine. Through this process the “Dreamers” became financially independent and to have stability. Out of the economy being good because of the results of DACA other recipients are not working they are in school studying for their actual care...

DACA!

DACA is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, it was the policy established in June of 2012 by former President Barack Obama. The policy was created to protect its applicants, commonly referred to as Dreamers, and to allow them to legally obtain jobs, apply to colleges, as well as obtain legal US identification. To apply for DACA you must be the child of an immigrant who was brought to the United States while under the age of 16 and are currently under the age of 31. Some common misconceptions about Dreamers are that because DACA allows them to legally attend college, obtain jobs and US identification, Dreamers are legal citizens of the United States. This is false. In fact, the course to obtain citizenship through DACA was never really made clear to the Dreamers. The second most common misconception about Dreamers is that Dreamers receive many benefits when they apply for DACA but never contribute the country. Again, this is false. Because Dreamers can legally apply for ...

Why DACA Should Be Protected!

President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA is a hugely successful program which benefited nearly 800,000 young people. Now, President Trump is ceremoniously trying to terminate the program and put these young peoples’ lives in grave danger. Even though DACA recipients came illegally to the USA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program should be legalized because most of the DACA recipients have not only lived their whole life in this country but, they have also contributed significantly to our economy. The average age of DACA recipients when they came here is 6 ½ years. Most of them don’t even know the language of their birth country. They learned to fall and rise in the very backyards of our neighborhoods. They had no clue that they were not permitted to live in this country until the time came when they had to apply for college. Just imagine how devastating it would have been for them as they always had a feeling that they are...
